Spinach Handbook

Sub-irrigation
The sub-irrigation of plants in the germination area allows for water uptake to the plant through the roots.  Spinach need more aeration than the lettuce seedlings which we have grown extensively.  As a result we found better results if we elevated the rockwool slabs containing spinach seeds above the nutrient solution.  The slabs are placed on a layer of landscaping fabric which is in turn placed on a layer of capillary mat.  Nutrient solution is wicked up through the capillary mat which hangs in the solution.  The nutrient solution is continuously circulated between the nutrient tank and the ebb and flow trays.
