Our Best Practices

Commercial Hydroponic Vegetable Production

Anything that grows outside can be grown in a greenhouse. There are, however, a limited number of crops that are commonly produced in greenhouses. They are:

  • Leafy greens (lettuce, herbs, spinach*)
  • Tomatoes - beefsteak or slicing, cluster, grape/cherry, heirloom
  • Cucumbers - seeded or seedless (European style)
  • Peppers - bell and specialty

* spinach is not typically produced hydroponically because of a water-borne pathogen problem called Pythium aphanadermatum. Cornell CEA has spent years working on a practical way to overcome this potentially devastating pathogen. You can see a summary of our research (as well as read very detailed reports) on the research page of this website.
