Our Best Practices

Commercial Hydroponic Vegetable Production

Anything that grows outside can be grown in a greenhouse. There are, however, a limited number of crops that are commonly produced in greenhouses. They are:

  • Leafy greens (lettuce, herbs, spinach*)
  • Tomatoes - beefsteak or slicing, cluster, grape/cherry, heirloom
  • Cucumbers - seeded or seedless (European style)
  • Peppers - bell and specialty

* spinach is not typically produced hydroponically because of a water-borne pathogen problem called Pythium aphanadermatum. Cornell CEA has spent years working on a practical way to overcome this potentially devastating pathogen. You can see a summary of our research (as well as read very detailed reports) on the research page of this website. You can find PDF's of our grower's handbooks for commercial hydroponic floating lettuce and baby spinach on the grower's handbooks page.
