The Center of Excellence for Controlled Environment Agriculture Technology Transfer, Education, and Applicable Research (CEA Center) will be providing periodic workshops for teachers (all levels but broken into primary, middle and high school), the general public, and facility operators (current greenhouse growers). This page will display upcoming workshops.
Public Workshops:
February 1, 2012. (Snow Date 2/2/12) Urban and Community Forestry Conference at the Clearpool Environmental Education Center in Carmel. Dr. Brechner will speak on rooftop greenhouses, aquaponics, and vertical greenhouses. Contact Stephanie Radin sradin@cornell.edu for information.
April 18, 2012. Unique Lighting Applications for Plants and Animals. Recent research in agricultural production reveals that spectrum, intensity and distribution affect successful growth of plants indoors - such as in greenhouses, aeroponic, and hydroponic environments. Also, with over 1400 animal labs in the US approved by the Public Health Service, lab animals are being used to advance knowledge in many areas of research. How do we provide the right light for these plants and animals? This seminar will highlight opportunities At the Syracuse Center of Excellence. Patricia Rizzo. rizzop2@rpi.edu.
Grower Workshop:
February 9, 2012. Nursery/Greenhouse School. The morning session will focus on perennials/other nursery greenhouse plants including a discussion of diseases by Margery Daughtrey, a list and description of insect pests by Dan Gilrein, a, plant fertility discussion by Neil Mattson, and a biocontrol update from Betsy Lamb. The afternoon session will be specific to Controlled Environment Agriculture (Greenhouses/High Tunnels etc.), and include a description of the CEA Center for Controlled Environment Agriculture services, lighting basics for plants, supplemental lighting., daily light integral light control, and estimating heating and lighting costs by Melissa Brechner. Betsy Lamb will cover pests in CEA vegetable production for hydroponic flat systems and other CEA applications. Neil Mattson will talk about managing water and fertilizer in soil-less vegetable production. CCE Extension Office in Orange County, Middletown, NY. Contact Rosemarie Baglia.rsb22@cornell.edu.
Teacher Workshops:
February 2, 2012. Hydroponics in the Classroom Crash Course. 4-8pm. Dr. Brechner will introduce using hydroponic systems as a teaching tool for science and agricultural education. The hydroponics curriculum developed through the CEA Center will be discussed along with practical discussions of how to provide plants with appropriate levels of light, heat, nutrients, and gasses (oxygen and carbon dioxide), as well as how to manage nutrient solutions and correct pH.CCE Extension office in Hudson, Columbia County. Contact Crystil-Lee Skoda. cmg245@cornell.edu
March 6 and 7, 2012. Intoduction to hydroponic systems for the Edible Schoolyard of East End participants at the Bridgehampton School in Suffolk County. The same material will be covered in two consecutive nights so that a maximum number of teachers may attend. Contact Caroline Kiang. ctk3@cornell.edu.
April 4, 2012. Introduction to hydroponics and the 'Grow With the Flow' system in Newark, NY. Contact Aime Matichak. ac882@cornell.edu.
