How Order In The Fridge Helps The Environment
The right order in the refrigerator benefits the climate in two ways. It saves energy which helps the environment and prevents food from spoiling prematurely.
Food waste is also a big problem worldwide. If food is produced “for the bin”, it is also bad for the climate. Production and transport consume water and resources and release climate-damaging emissions. This could have been saved for the benefit of the environment.
Order in the camping fridge saves resources and energy
A simple way to avoid food waste is to stock your camping fridge properly. On the one hand, correct storage makes sensitive foods last longer and you can enjoy them longer while camping. On the other hand, this ensures the most energy-efficient use of the device.
The optimal storage system makes correct use of the different temperature zones
The bottom drawer is commonly known as the crisper. The temperature here is 10 to 13 degrees Celsius, making salads and vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, and peppers feel good. Vegetables with high water content, such as tomatoes, do not belong in the fridge. They lose their aroma there and may even become moldy more quickly.
The coldest zone in most refrigerators is directly above the vegetable drawer, in the middle compartments. Here it is usually between two and four degrees cold. Accordingly, perishable products such as fish or meat products should be stored there.
The upper areas of the refrigerator have temperatures of six to ten degrees Celsius. Dairy products such as yogurt, cream and cheese, eggs, jams, and cakes at the top, as well as the leftovers of meals that have already been prepared, can be stored here. Leftovers should always cool down before putting them in the fridge. This saves energy and prevents condensation from forming.
In the refrigerator door, it is relatively warmest. Drinks, sauces, but also butter can be stored here.
How exactly the refrigerator should best be stocked depends on the individual properties of the device in question. In any case, it is advisable to take a close look at the instructions for use of your own device in order to fully exploit its potential.
Load the fridge properly and save electricity at the same time
If you use your refrigerator intelligently and efficiently, a temperature setting of seven degrees Celsius is sufficient. In a well-stocked fridge, the food you need is within easy reach so that the fridge door does not have to be left open for long and no cold escapes unnecessarily. In order to keep power consumption low, it is also advisable to defrost the freezer compartment regularly.
